The Unlikely Path from NASA Systems Engineering to Fitness Industry Innovation

I didn’t start as a fitness professional. I started as an engineer.

Former NASA Engineer + ISS Operations Controller | CGM + Biosensor Specialist | Fitness Innovator

I didn’t start as a fitness professional. I started as an engineer.

I worked at NASA as a Certified Operations Controller, managing complex systems where precision and data weren’t optional; they were life-or-death.

I’ve spent almost 30 years managing a personal metabolic condition using continuous glucose monitor technology. I learned to read patterns, understand my body’s unique responses, and optimize my health through data, not guesswork.

When I left NASA, I saw fitness professionals struggling with the same problem I’d solved years ago: How do you personalize nutrition when everybody responds differently?

Diet logs don’t work. Food tracking apps don’t show you metabolic responses. Trainers were guessing, even the really good ones.

But CGM technology changes everything.

With real-time glucose data, you can see exactly how each client’s body responds to specific foods, training intensity, sleep quality, and stress levels. You can deliver truly personalized coaching instead of cookie-cutter programs.

The problem? Most trainers don’t know how to interpret CGM data or translate it into coaching recommendations.

That’s why I created the Certified BioFit Specialist™ program.

I took everything I learned from NASA about systems management, everything I learned from 25+ years of personal CGM use, and everything fitness professionals need to build profitable biosensor coaching practices, and I built a comprehensive certification program.

Today, I’ve trained fitness professionals who are now delivering precision coaching and charging premium rates for it.

My mission is simple:

Train 1,000 fitness professionals to become biosensor coaching experts, elevating the entire industry and improving outcomes for millions of clients.

The Problem I Saw in the Fitness Industry

After leaving NASA, I started paying attention to the fitness and wellness industry. I saw trainers and coaches doing incredible work, but they were all facing the same fundamental limitation:

They couldn't see inside their clients' metabolisms.

They were asking clients:

  • "How did you feel after that meal?"

  • "Do you think you’re eating enough protein?"

  • "Why do you think you’re not losing weight?"

And clients were answering with their best guesses, incomplete food logs, and subjective feelings that didn’t reveal the actual metabolic responses.

Meanwhile, I was watching the consumer CGM industry explode:

  • Levels Health charging $398/month for a sensor + app

  • Nutrisense charging $399/month for sensor + dietitian coaching

  • Signos, Veri, January, all competing for direct consumer dollars

These companies were keeping clients away from the trainers who actually knew them, understood their training, and could deliver better results.

And trainers had no professional pathway to enter this space:

❌ No certification teaching CGM interpretation for fitness professionals

❌ No sensor access (can’t compete with consumer apps on price)

❌ No business systems for launching CGM services profitably

❌ No medical safety training (liability exposure without proper education)

The gap was massive. Trainers were losing clients to apps. Clients were paying $400/month for automated algorithms instead of personalized coaching. And the industry had no solution.

Why I Created BioFit

The Gap No One Was Filling

I combined my three areas of expertise

1. NASA Systems Analysis | methodology and precision
2. 25+ Years Personal CGM Use | practical application and pattern recognition
3. Understanding Fitness Business Needs | What Trainers Actually Require to Succeed

The result: Certified BioFit Specialist™ Program

The first and only comprehensive certification specifically designed for fitness professionals to deliver biosensor coaching services with:

Complete CGM interpretation training | 47-Pattern Recognition System
Sensor access | Profitable Business Economics
Business systems | Pricing, Marketing, Client Acquisition, Delivery
Medical safety protocols | Scope of Practice, Referral Guidelines
Ongoing support | Specialist Directory, Community, Continuing Education

I didn't create this to compete with existing certifications. I created it to fill a gap that no one else was addressing.

NASM, ACE, and ISSA teach general fitness. They don’t cover biosensor coaching at all.

Diabetes education programs are for medical professionals managing disease, not trainers optimizing performance.

Consumer CGM companies, they sell to end users, not to professionals who could deliver superior coaching.

BioFit exists because the fitness industry needed a professional pathway into the biosensor revolution, and no one else was building it.

My Approach

NASA Rigor Meets Practical Application

How I Teach

My teaching philosophy comes from years of NASA training programs combined with 25+ years of real-world CGM application:

Principle 1: Precision Without Perfection

NASA taught me that precision matters, but also that perfection is impossible and that protocols must account for human error and variability.

In BioFit training:

  • I teach precise pattern recognition (47 distinct glucose patterns)

  • But I also teach judgment and context (not every spike requires intervention)

  • Protocols are guidelines, not rigid rules (adapt to individual clients)

  • Safety is non-negotiable; optimization is individualized

Principle 2: Systems Thinking

You cannot change one variable in isolation. Glucose responses reflect sleep, stress, training, nutrition, hormones, and hydration, all interconnected.

In BioFit training:

  • I teach how patterns reveal systemic issues (not just food problems)

  • I emphasize root cause analysis (why is glucose spiking, not just "stop eating that")

  • I train specialists to look holistically (glucose data + client context)

Principle 3: Safety First, Always

At NASA, safety protocols were non-negotiable. One mistake could cost lives.

In BioFit training:

  • Medical referral protocols are a mandatory curriculum (you must know when to refer)

  • Scope of practice is clearly defined (what you can and cannot do)

  • Red flag recognition is heavily emphasized (danger signs require immediate action)

  • Client safety > business revenue, every single time

Principle 4: Data Literacy

Data is only valuable if you can interpret it correctly and communicate it clearly.

In BioFit training:

  • I teach graph interpretation (not just numbers, but visual pattern recognition)

  • I provide client communication scripts (explain complex data simply)

  • I emphasize signal vs. noise (not every data point matters)

  • I train "translation skills" (data → insight → action → client understands value)

Principle 5: Continuous Improvement

NASA culture emphasizes learning from every mission. Debrief, analyze, improve, repeat.

In BioFit training:

  • I require continuing education (8 hours annually)

  • I update the curriculum based on new research and technology

  • I gather specialist feedback and improve systems continuously

  • I created a community for peer learning and shared knowledge
